The American company Bobcat Company manufactures equipment for both construction and agricultural. Formerly located in Gwinner, its American headquarters are currently located in West Fargo, North Dakota. It relocated its European headquarters from Waterloo, Belgium, to Dob, Czech Republic, in 2017. (where Bobcat operates one of its European manufacturing plants). From 1995 to July 2007, it was a division of the Ingersoll Rand Company until being sold to Doosan Infracore for US$4.9 billion.
Under the Bobcat brand, the firm sells skid steer loaders, small excavators, side-by-sides, small tractors, and other hydraulic compact equipment. This is one of the few important manufacturers in North Dakota.
Near Rothsay, Minnesota, in the 1950s, Louis and Cyril Keller ran Keller Welding and Repair. Local turkey farmer Eddie Velo informed the Kellers in 1956 that he needed a tool that was both transportable and compact enough to fit within a pole barn. On February 4, 1957, the Velo brothers showed a compact, three-wheeled design with a belt-driven transmission. In 1958, after learning from Velo, who gave the Kellers complete access to his operations, about problems with the belt-driven transmission, the Kellers created and patented a clutch-based transmission system that was more durable. The Melroe M60 loader was built on top of the upgraded transmission.
The Kellers' uncle, an equipment salesperson for the Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, North Dakota, offered a marketing suggestion that resulted in a request for the Kellers to take part in the 1958 Minnesota State Fair. In 1960, Melroe unveiled the four-wheeled M400 model "Skid-Steer Loader." The company started marketing similar products under the "Bobcat" brand name in 1962, following the introduction of the 440 model loader. While driving between Minneapolis and Gwinner, Les Melroe and advertising executive Lynn Bickett were brainstorming names when they came up with the nickname "Bobcat". To promote the first loaders, Bickett and Sylvan Melroe came up with the motto "tough, swift, and agile."
In 1969, Clark Equipment Company acquired Melroe Manufacturing Company. After that, in 1995, Clark Equipment Company bought Ingersoll-Rand. Along with the remainder of its construction equipment business, Ingersoll-Rand sold Clark Equipment Company to the Doosan Group of South Korea in 2007 for US$4.9 billion. The Bobcat Company's operations have been taken over by The Clark Equipment Company. The term "Bobcat" may be used as a trademark by The Bobcat Company.
The seven-year partnership between Doosan and Doosan Bobcat came to an end on January 1 when they were split into separate businesses.
Hyundai Heavy Industries bought a 30% controlling stake in Doosan Infracore in July 2021 from the company for about $722.45 million. Doosan Infracore will join the new Hyundai Genuine organisation.
